Frequently asked questions
What are the advantages of walk and talk therapy?
There are many advantages to taking talking therapy into the beautiful outdoors, including the physical benefits of walking. Research tells us that walking therapy also can:
· Help people to feel more relaxed (Hartig et al 1991)
· Help creative thinking (Oppezzo & Schwartz 2014)
· Help to reduce PTSD (Koziel et al 2021)
· Help to reduce stress
Where do walk and talk sessions take place?
We will discuss your preferred walking routes. All walks are easy and on flat ground. We will go at an and easy relaxed pace so we can talk. I have routes mapped out along the seafront in Seasalter, Whitstable, Herne Bay and surrounding countryside. I also have walks through Regent’s Park in London. Routes vary from seaside to country footpaths and in London a beautiful park. They have been chosen for calm and peace.
How long do walk and talk sessions last?
Sessions last 50-60 minutes. The number of sessions depends on what you want to work on and vary from client to client. We can discuss this further at the initial consultation when we know more about what you want to work on.
How many sessions do I need for walk and talk therapy?
Solution focused therapy is a brief therapy and takes fewer sessions than many other talking therapies. We go session by session and there is no obligation to book a following session. You will decide how many sessions you would like. On average people often have between 6-8 sessions. You can also decide how often you would like sessions to take place. Many people take weekly sessions but I also have clients who dip in and out as they are available or when they feel they would benefit from time with me and in nature.
What happens in a walk and talk therapy session?
We will start by talking about how things have been in the last week and any goals you may have for the session. We look at how you would like the future to be and what will help you to move towards that in a comfortable way. It is a forward-looking therapy so there is no need to talk about any past experiences that you do not want to talk about.
How much to walk and talk therapy sessions cost?
The price for walk and talk sessions in Kent are £95 per session. These sessions are in pre-arranged locations, please ask for more information on these. Walk and talk sessions in Regents Park London are £145. These costs do not include any parking fees.
What if the weather is bad?
Sessions can usually take place in most weather conditions. However, if there is a weather warning or if you feel the weather is going to be a problem, the session can be moved to Zoom or take place face-to-face at my clinic room with prior arrangement.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothing suitable for the season and suitable footwear are recommended. Most of the routes are on even paths, making the walk relaxing and manageable. It might also be a good idea to have a hat, bottle of water and spf.
Do I need to be physically fit?
Routes are designed to be easy walking with mostly flat and even footpaths and not challenging so we can speak comfortably while moving. The distances vary but are around 2 miles/4km. If you have any concerns about your fitness to walk or any prior medical conditions, please check with your GP first. The focus is on talking rather than building physical resilience.
Is walk and talk therapy confidential?
Yes, we follow the same rules of privacy and confidentiality as all therapy sessions. Routes are chosen where it is possible to maintain distance from any other walkers we may encounter. It will not be obvious that we are doing anything other than taking a walk in nature. We may pause and enjoy the views to allow any other walkers to pass by and continue our journey.
